The Musée Rops in Namur is hosting a particularly interesting exhibition on the relationship between Belgian artists and the art market between 1850 and 1900, featuring work by Ieper. The exhibition is called Adjugé! and runs until 3 January 2021.

The museums of Ypres regularly participate in temporary exhibitions organised by the Musée Rops in Namur. For this exhibition, the Ypres Museum suggested a little-known painting by “our” Louis Delbeke from the Museum of Ixelles. Louis Delbeke was born in Poperinge and designed the murals in the Cloth Hall. The painting was well received and immediately became the eye-catcher of the exhibition.

We were also able to loan pieces from our own collection. Two drawings by the landscape painter François Roffiaen are on display, as well as Demannez's print, “A Christian Martyr”, and the rare sketchbook of Théodore Ceriez. In it, he meticulously recorded the sales of his paintings between 1864 and 1896.

The exhibition is accompanied by a beautiful book with Delbeke's painting on the cover! The book itself contains various illustrations from the Ypres Museum:

  • Three photographic views of the Brussels Salon in 1863 by none other than Louis Ghémar
  • Photo of Louis Titz and colleagues at an exhibition in 1884
  • Funny caricature of a painting dealer by Ceriez from 1854
  • Old photo of a large work by Virginie Bovie, also by photographer Louis Ghémar.
